When is the US Border Open for Canadian Snowbird Association members?

St Pete Talk, member of the Canadian Snowbird Association | Snowbirds

St Pete Talk is pleased to share with fellow members of the Canadian Snowbird Association that earlier this week, the federal government of Canada announced that starting August 9, 2021, Canada plans to open the border and allowing entry to American citizens and permanent residents, who are currently residing in the United States, and have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to entering Canada for non-essential travel.  Starting in late August, 2021 the US land border will open allowing Canadian snowbirds to enter the US and return to Canada without the need to quarantine.

Returning to Canada Snowbirds need to download ArriveCAN

This winter Canadian snowbirds who return to Canada will be subject to limited exceptions, and all snowbirds must use ArriveCAN (app or web portal) to submit their travel information, and if they are eligible to enter Canada and meet specific criteria, fully vaccinated snowbirds will not have to quarantine upon arrival in Canada.

End of Pre-entry COVID-19 testing

All snowbirds regardless of vaccination status will still require a pre-entry COVID-19 molecular test result; however effective August 9, 2021, the Government of Canada is adjusting its post-arrival testing strategy for fully vaccinated snowbirds by using a new border testing surveillance program at airports and land border crossings.

Accordingly, Canadian snowbirds who are fully vaccinated maybe be randomly selected to complete a COVID-19 test.

[There are no changes to the mandatory testing requirements for unvaccinated snowbirds.]

Snowbirds Returning to Canada need a Quarantine Plan

Further, with the advent of increased vaccination rates in Canada, declining COVID-19 cases, and reduced pressure on health care capacity, the three-night government authorized hotel stay requirement will be eliminated for all snowbirds arriving by air as of 12:01 A.M. EDT on August 9.

Fully vaccinated snowbirds who meet the requirements will be exempt from quarantine; however, all travelers must still provide a quarantine plan and be prepared to quarantine in case it is determined at the border that they do not meet the necessary requirements.

If you are a snowbird who is unvaccinated or partially vaccinated will still be required to quarantine upon arrival to Canada for a 14-day period and a full list of requirements for entry into Canada can be accessed here, https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid.

When is the U.S. Land Border Opening?

The United States government has recently announced that the U.S. land border will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least Eary November 2021. Snowbirds who travel by car to the United States and do so with their Canadian vehicle, and we know that members of the Canadian Snowbird Association are eager to return to Florida and we remain optimistic that the U.S. land border will be open by the fall of 2021.
